Lagayan
Lagayan is a small rural municipality in Abra province, in the Cordillera Administrative Region of the Philippines. It has a population of 5,154 people (2024 census) and covers about 216 square kilometers. The town sits in a hilly area, with elevations ranging from about 67 to 742 meters above sea level.
Lagayan is divided into 5 barangays. It is located about 19 kilometers from the provincial capital Bangued and roughly 425 kilometers from Manila. The coordinates are about 17°43′N, 120°43′E.
The local government is headed by Mayor Edmarc L. Crisologo and Vice Mayor Apolinar B. Molina, with Menchie B. Bernos as the representative. A municipal council governs Lagayan, and the Lagayan Schools District Office oversees all public and private schools in the area.
Economically, Lagayan is a 5th class municipality with a poverty incidence of about 25.65% (2021). The town’s finances have generally grown over the years, with increasing revenue and assets reported up to 2021. Electricity is provided by ABRECO. The ZIP code is 2824, and the area observes the Philippine time zone (UTC+8). Native languages include Itneg, Ilocano, and Filipino.
A notable historical event: on November 2, 1987, members of the New People’s Army raided the municipal hall and the mayor’s house, taking hostages.
Lagayan’s education and governance are organized under local government rules, and the municipality continues to develop its services for residents.
