The Lesser Poland dialect group (dialekt małopolski) is a set of Polish dialects spoken in southern Poland. The exact area is hard to define because the dialect features spread and mix with neighboring varieties, creating many transitional subdialects. The group traces back to the language of the Vistulans, an ancient people who lived along the Vistula River, and today it is the largest group of Polish dialects. The most important subdialect is the Goral ethnolect, spoken by Gorals in the Western Carpathians near the border with Slovakia; this includes many related dialects. Features of the Lesser Poland group appear in different amounts in different places, so you can hear a mix of sounds and words across the region. In short, it’s a large, living family of Polish accents spoken in southern Poland.
