Wengyuan County
Wengyuan County is in the north of Guangdong Province, China. It borders Jiangxi to the northeast and is part of Shaoguan City. The county covers 2,234 square kilometers and had a population of about 421,756 in 2019. Population density is around 189 people per square kilometer; about 124,000 live in urban areas and 298,000 in rural areas.
Most residents (about 99.6%) speak Hakka. Some areas also have Yao languages. Minorities make up about 0.6% of the population, mainly Yao people. The name means “source of the Weng River,” a tributary of the Bei River.
Wengyuan is known for plum blossoms and orchid cultivation, which accounts for about 70% of China’s orchid production. The county governs eight towns. Elevation ranges from 100 meters above sea level (in Guangdu town) to 1,300 meters (Qixingdun peak).
