Ladislav Čisárik
Ladislav Čisárik (29 December 1953 – 3 August 2017) was a Slovak heraldic artist, painter and graphic designer. In 1990, together with Ladislav Vrtel, he designed Slovakia’s coat of arms, the national flag, and the president’s standard. He also designed or updated coats of arms and seals for more than 100 towns and municipalities in Slovakia. Čisárik ran his own graphic design studio, Signum, in Bratislava from 1979 until his death in 2017. He worked with the Heraldic Commission of the Interior Ministry to create new national symbols after the Velvet Revolution. Their coat of arms design was based on a 14th‑century Hungarian seal of King Louis I, but they enlarged the double cross to make it a more prominent symbol. They also designed the flag of Slovakia (in force since 3 September 1992) and the presidential standard, both using their coat of arms. In 1994, he illustrated a guidebook called Najstaršie rody na Slovensku (Oldest Families in Slovakia). In 1996 he released a poster map showing the official flags and coats of arms of 136 Slovak cities. Čisárik died on 3 August 2017 after a serious illness, aged 63. He is survived by his wife, Emilia Čisáriková.
