2003 Pocono 500
On June 8, 2003, the Pocono 500 was held at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pennsylvania. The 2.5-mile triangular track hosted 200 laps (500 miles) in front of about 100,000 fans. Jimmie Johnson won the pole with a lap of 52.741 seconds, and Sterling Marlin led the most laps (44). Derrike Cope and Morgan Shepherd did not qualify for the race.
Tony Stewart of Joe Gibbs Racing won the race, taking the lead on the final round of pit stops on lap 190 and holding off the field as a crash on lap 198 brought out a caution. This was Stewart’s 16th career NASCAR Winston Cup win and his first of the season. Mark Martin finished second and Matt Kenseth third, both for Roush Racing. The race was broadcast on FOX with announcers Mike Joy, Larry McReynolds and Darrell Waltrip; MRN provided radio coverage.
