Charles Cornwallis, 1st Earl Cornwallis (1700–1762) was a British nobleman. He was the son of Charles Cornwallis, 4th Baron Cornwallis, and Lady Charlotte Butler. He went to Clare College, Cambridge in 1717 and inherited his father’s title in 1722, becoming The Lord Cornwallis.

In 1740 he joined the Privy Council and was appointed Lord-Lieutenant of the Tower Hamlets and Constable of the Tower of London, positions he held until his death in 1762. In 1753 he was created Viscount Brome and Earl Cornwallis.

He married Elizabeth Townshend in 1722, and they had seven children. He died on 23 June 1762 at age 62 and was succeeded by his eldest son, Charles Cornwallis, who would become a famous military leader and was made Marquess Cornwallis in 1792. Elizabeth Townshend died in 1785.
