The 24th Preakness Stakes took place on May 30, 1899, at Gravesend Race Track in Coney Island, New York. It was a $1,000-added race for three-year-old Thoroughbreds run over 1 1/16 miles on dirt. Half Time, ridden by jockey Richard Clawson and trained by Frank McCabe for owner Philip J. Dwyer, won in 1:47, matching the Gravesend track record. Filigrane finished second. The race came after the Kentucky Derby on May 4 and the Belmont Stakes on May 25 of that year. Clawson had already won the Belmont Stakes in 1899 aboard Jean Bereaud, beating Half Time. Although the Preakness was later recognized as the second leg of the U.S. Triple Crown, this designation began in 1919.
