Komatsu 960E-1 is Komatsu’s first-generation ultra-class off-road haul truck. Built in Peoria, Illinois since 2008, it can haul up to 360 short tons (327 metric tons) of material. It uses a diesel/AC electric powertrain: a 3,500-horsepower V18 diesel engine drives an alternator that powers two rear-axle induction motors. The truck is 51 ft 2 in long, 30 ft 2 in wide, 24 ft 2 in tall, with a wheelbase of 21 ft 10 in, and fully loaded it weighs up to 1,270,000 pounds (580 tons). Top speed is about 40 mph.

Because of its enormous size, it is shipped in pieces to sites for final assembly and cannot be driven on public roads. When introduced in 2008, it was Komatsu’s largest truck. It was surpassed in 2016 by the 980E-4, which has a 400 short ton (363 t) capacity. It competes with the Bucyrus MT5500AC.
