Powelliphanta hochstetteri is a large carnivorous land snail from New Zealand. It belongs to the amber snail group and is part of the Rhytididae family. This species lives in the Marlborough and Nelson regions on the South Island. There are five subspecies.

History:
Powelliphanta hochstetteri was first described in 1862 by the German scientist Ludwig Pfeiffer. He named it Helix hochstetteri based on the shell alone. The name honors Ferdinand von Hochstetter, who had brought the shell from New Zealand.

The eggs are oval and about 12 by 10 millimetres.
