Kitcharao
Kitcharao is a municipality in the province of Agusan del Norte, in the Caraga region of the Philippines. It covers about 171.92 square kilometers and sits at elevations ranging from 38 to 772 meters.
History and creation
Kitcharao was created on June 22, 1963, by Republic Act No. 3842, and was once a part of Jabonga. The first local officials took office on August 29, 1963. People from different parts of Luzon and the Visayas settled here, bringing Ilocano, Tagalog, Hiligaynon, Waray, Cebuano, Boholano, and Mamanwa communities.
Population and geography
As of the 2020 census, Kitcharao had 21,278 residents. The 2024 census reported about 22,671 people, giving a population density of around 120 inhabitants per square kilometer. The municipality is divided into 11 barangays. Newer barangays Crossing and Songkoy were created in 2005.
Government
Kitcharao is classified as a 4th class municipality. The local government is headed by Mayor Aristotle E. Montante and Vice Mayor Leo D. Galua, with Ma. Angelica Amante-Matba representing it in the national Congress.
Economy and services
The municipality’s poverty incidence was about 30.6% in 2021. In 2022, Kitcharao recorded around 168.5 million pesos in revenue, 568.9 million in assets, 176.6 million in expenditures, and 123.2 million in liabilities. Electricity is supplied by ANECO (Agusan del Norte Electric Cooperative). The transport terminal connects to Butuan and Surigao for multicabs, buses, vans, and jeepneys.
