Kikagati is a small town in southwestern Uganda, in Isingiro District of the Western Region. It sits on the border with Tanzania, across the Kagera River from Murongo in Tanzania’s Kagera Region. The town lies at about 1,532 meters (5,026 feet) above sea level, with coordinates roughly 1.045°S, 30.669°E.

Kikagati is about 63 kilometers south of Mbarara by road and about 331 kilometers southwest of Kampala. The Kagera River marks part of the border between Uganda and Tanzania, and Kikagati is an important cross-border crossing point. The area is hilly, with Uganda’s side rising to about 1,420 meters and Tanzania’s side to about 1,560 meters.

In and around Kikagati you’ll find the Kikagati Town Council offices, the Uganda–Tanzania border crossing, and the Kikagati Central Market with fresh produce. The southern end of the Mbarara–Kikagati Road finishes here, and the road continues into Tanzania as Highway B182. The western arm of the Kobero–Bugene–Mutukula–Kikagati Road also ends at Kikagati.

A 16-megawatt Kikagati Power Station is under development by Kikagati Power Company Limited, with its electricity to be shared equally between Uganda and Tanzania. The town has faced waste disposal challenges, including plastic waste and food scraps along the roadside, noted in 2018.
