Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute
National Technical University "Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute" (KhPI) is a public technical university in Kharkiv, Ukraine. Founded in 1885, it is one of the oldest technical universities in Ukraine and dates back to the Russian Empire era. It began as the Practical Technological Institute with two departments (mechanical and chemical) for about 125 students. Over time it received several names and reorganizations, including Kharkiv V.I. Lenin Polytechnic Institute. After World War II, it was rebuilt and expanded. In 1994 it became Kharkiv State Polytechnic University, in 2000 it gained national technical university status, and in 2010 it was named Autonomous Research National University NTU KhPI.
Today KhPI is accredited at the highest level and offers 91 full‑time programs and 69 part‑time programs. It has a large student body and a campus with about 20 buildings. The main campus sits near Kharkiv’s central areas, with a separate dormitory campus that includes a Student Palace and a Sports Complex. The university’s faculties cover fields such as machine building, automation, electrical engineering, electronics, chemical engineering, control systems, computer science and software engineering.
KhPI has a strong sports tradition and hosts facilities used by Olympic and world-class athletes. It also hosts research centers, including laboratories in radio electronics and ionosphere studies.
In rankings, KhPI was 105th regionally in QS Emerging Europe and Central Asia in 2022 and is listed in the global Times Higher Education ranking (1001+).
Note: The university’s Sports Complex was destroyed by shelling in June 2022.
