Kelly Bruno
Kelly Bruno (born March 23, 1984) is an American amputee athlete and doctor. Born in Durham, North Carolina, she had her leg amputated below the knee at six months old due to a congenital deformity. She holds world records for amputees in the 200m and 800m, and has won gold at the 2008 New York Triathlon and the ITU World Triathlon Championships in the amputee division. She was the second amputee to finish the Ironman Hawaii Kona Triathlon in 2007, setting a course record. In 2008 she became the first amputee ball girl at the US Open. Bruno earned her medical degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed her anesthesiology residency there; she later worked as a Pain Research Fellow at the San Diego VA Medical Center. Her father, Dr. Richard Bruno, was killed in the January 2010 Haiti earthquake while on a mission. In 2010 she competed on Survivor: Nicaragua (season 21), finishing 15th after being eliminated in episode six.
