Kazinag National Park
Kazinag National Park is a protected area in Baramulla district, Jammu and Kashmir, India. It covers about 160 square kilometers and was established in 1992 under the Wildlife Protection Act. The park sits on the north bank of the Jhelum River and is part of a proposed trans-Karakoram peace park with Pakistan.
The climate is temperate, with warm summers and cold winters (roughly -20°C to 30°C). Winter brings snow, spring brings rain, and there are occasional showers in summer. The area experiences four seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter.
Flora here is mostly coniferous forest. Deodar forests are common at lower elevations, with fir and spruce higher up and pine spread across a wide range. Birch grows in the subalpine zone, while broadleaf trees such as Prunus and Acer appear in middle elevations. The park also has temperate scrub with species like Indigofera, Spirea, and Rosa, as well as alpine scrub and meadows at higher elevations. Shrubs such as Rosa macrofolia and Viburnum grandiflorum are found along streams in lower areas.
Around 20 mammal species live in the park, including rare and threatened ones like the Markhor (wild goat), Himalayan musk deer, Himalayan brown bear, Himalayan black bear, Indian leopard, Himalayan marmot, yellow-throated marten, and the Kashmir flying squirrel.
There are about 120 bird species, with examples such as the golden eagle, monal pheasant, cheer pheasant, sparrow hawk, snow pigeon, cuckoo, and various kingfishers and other passerines. The park also hosts 17 butterfly species, including regal Apollo, common blue Apollo, common red Apollo, meadow brown, and large tortoiseshell.
Kazinag Mountain, at 4732 meters, lies in Langate Tehsil of Kupwara District and forms part of the Line of Control with Pakistan. The peak is snow-clad most of the year. The main attractions are the Kazinag Spring and Kazinag Glacier. Water from this area feeds the Kehmil, Pohru, Mawar, and Talar rivers, with some flow reaching Pakistan through Nowkote.
The park sits at elevations from about 1800 to 4700 meters and has rugged terrain. The best time for birdwatching is May to September, while April to May is good for spotting mammals; June to August is also a favorable visiting period.
