The Statute of Autonomy of the Principality of Asturias is the Spanish Organic Law that defines the self-government powers, bodies and institutions of Asturias. The autonomy process began on 1 June 1979 when political parties in the Oviedo Deputation (UCD, PSOE, PCA and CD) agreed to start it. The draft Statute was prepared under Article 143.1 of the Spanish Constitution and required the approval of 72 of Asturias’ 78 municipalities. On 22 April 1980 the project was sent to the Congress of Deputies. It was approved on 15 December 1981, and Organic Law 7/1981, the Statute of Autonomy for Asturias, was published in the Official State Gazette (BOE) on 30 December 1981. In 1999, the name was changed to the Statute of Autonomy of the Principality of Asturias.
