Kate Charles
Kate Charles (born 1950) is an American crime writer who now lives in the United Kingdom and is a British citizen. She was born in Cincinnati as Carol Fosher, the daughter of Elmer and Kathryn Fosher. Her family moved to Bloomington, Illinois, when she was ten. She finished high school in Bloomington, earned a library science degree from Illinois State University in 1972, and later completed an MA at Indiana University Bloomington. She is married to Rory Chase and lives in Ludlow, Shropshire, UK. Charles has served as chair of the Crime Writers' Association and the Barbara Pym Society. She underwent open-heart surgery in 1996. She was elected to the Detection Club in 2010. In 2012 she received the George N. Dove Award from the Popular Culture Association for her work organizing the St Hilda's Crime and Mystery Conference since 1994. Her novels are mostly set in the Church of England, and her 2005 novel Evil Intent features a female Anglican priest as the central character. Other recurring characters include solicitor David Middleton-Brown and artist Lucy Kingsley, and her books often explore church politics.
