Karwinskia humboldtiana, also known as coyotillo, cacachila, or Humboldt coyotillo, is a flowering shrub or small tree in the buckthorn family (Rhamnaceae). It naturally grows in southern and western Texas and much of Mexico. The plant’s seeds and leaves contain toxic compounds (eleutherin, 7-methoxyeleutherin, chrysophanol, and β-amyrin) found in the fruits, which can harm humans and livestock. Ingesting the plant can cause an ascending paralysis that may be fatal, but symptoms often appear after days or weeks and can resemble Guillain-Barré syndrome.
