Kansas City Spurs
Kansas City Spurs were an American professional soccer team in the North American Soccer League (NASL). Based in Kansas City, Missouri, they existed from 1968 to 1970. The club began as the Chicago Spurs and moved to Kansas City after the NASL formed in 1967 from the merger of the NPSL and USA. They played home games at Kansas City Municipal Stadium (capacity 35,561) for 1968 and 1969, and in 1970 moved to Hicks Field at the Pembroke Hill School. The Spurs’ colors were red and white.
Coaches were Janos Bedl in 1968–69 and English coach Alan Rogers in 1970. The Spurs won the NASL Championship in 1969. That year the league split into two halves; the Spurs also won the International Cup, with Wolverhampton Wanderers representing them in the first half, finishing 6–2–0. Notable players included Willy Roy and Pepe Fernandez, and the team drew about 4,273 fans per game.
In 1970 the Spurs finished last in the Northern Division and dissolved after the season. They had radio coverage across all three seasons and limited CBS TV coverage in 1968.
