Hyundai i-oniq
The Hyundai i-oniq was a 2012 concept car, a sporty three‑door hatchback that combined a battery-electric drive with a small gasoline range extender. It debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2012 and is also known as HED-8. The name blends “ion” and “unique,” a nod to its design and purpose. The car was designed at Hyundai’s Europe Tech Centre in Rüsselsheim, Germany.
Power and range: The i-oniq uses an 80 kW electric motor powered by a lithium‑ion battery, giving about 120 km (75 miles) of pure electric range. When the battery runs low, a 1.0-liter three‑cylinder gasoline engine (45 kW) drives a 60 kW generator to recharge the battery and keep the car going, for a total range of up to 700 km (430 miles). With the range extender in use, CO2 emissions are around 45 g/km.
Interior and design: The instrument panel and steering‑wheel display used projection technology for depth, and BASF helped with seating and exterior colors. The i-oniq concept helped influence Hyundai’s later Ioniq models and the Ioniq sub‑brand launched in 2020.
