Galeazzo I Visconti
Galeazzo I Visconti (January 21, 1277 – August 6, 1328) was the lord of Milan from 1322 to 1327. He was born into the Visconti family, the son of Matteo I Visconti and Bonacossa Borri, and he married Beatrice d'Este in 1300. Because of political trouble, the Visconti were forced to leave Milan for several years and they lived at the Este and Bonacolsi courts.
In 1322 he became capitano del popolo (captain of the people) of Milan and defeated a papal-Angevin army at Bassignana. Pope John XXII excommunicated him in 1323, and Milan faced unrest that weakened his power. With support from Emperor Louis IV, he defeated another papal army at Monza.
In 1328, after accusations of betrayal by his brother Marco and the murder of his brother Stefano Visconti, the emperor had him imprisoned in Monza. He was freed in March 1328 and died in Pescia on August 6, 1328, at age 51. His son Azzone succeeded him as lord of Milan, and his daughter Ricciarda married Tommaso II di Saluzzo.
