Software Technology Park of India (STPI) in Darbhanga is the city’s first IT park and the second STPI center in Bihar. It is the 68th STPI center in India and is operated as an autonomous body under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). The park aims to promote software exports from the country.
Location and size
The IT park is located inside the ITI Laheriasarai campus at Ramnagar, Darbhanga. It is a two-story building covering about 16,000 square feet.
Inauguration and purpose
The park was inaugurated on 18 July 2025 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who spoke about it during a program held in Motihari, Bihar. The facility is intended to provide space for IT startups and companies in the Mithila region, helping create jobs and giving Darbhanga a new identity as an IT hub.
Historical overview
- 2018: Bihar’s former finance minister Sushil Kumar Modi announced the proposal for a Software Technology Park of India in Darbhanga during the Patna Ideathon.
- 2020: Plans were announced to develop the IT park on about 10 acres.
- 2024: Two companies, Mithila Stack and AbhiCares, were allotted offices in the IT Tower; more than a dozen foreign companies had also shown interest.
- 2025: Construction was completed with an investment of around Rs 10 crore, and the IT park was virtually inaugurated by the Prime Minister.
Impact
STPI Darbhanga is expected to boost IT employment, support startups, and attract more IT investment to the Mithila region, giving a fresh identity to the city in the tech sector.
