June 2016 Mogadishu attacks
In June 2016, Mogadishu, Somalia, was hit by a series of deadly hotel and other attacks blamed on al-Shabaab.
On June 1, 2016, a car bomb exploded outside the Ambassador Hotel and gunmen attacked inside. Sixteen people were killed and about 55 were injured. Three attackers died. The attack came soon after Somali officials said they had killed senior al-Shabaab member Mohamed Kuno, a claim made as reports said 16 other militants were killed with him. Two Somali MPs, Abdullahi Jama Kabaweyne and Mohamoud Mohamed Gure, were among the dead.
On June 25, 2016, attackers struck the Naso-Hablod hotel. A car bomb went off, then gunmen stormed the building and held hostages. At least 15 people were killed (including the attackers) and more than 25 were injured. Four attackers were involved and all were killed.
On June 30, 2016, a roadside bomb exploded near Lafoole, southwest of Mogadishu, killing at least 20 civilians on a crowded minibus. No group claimed responsibility, but al-Shabaab was suspected.
These attacks are part of a long pattern of al-Shabaab violence in Mogadishu since 2015.
