Joyce Barnes
Joyce Barnes (McCoy) was a pitcher in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL). She was born on October 18, 1925, in Hutchinson, Kansas, and died on July 22, 2017, in Hutchinson. Barnes was one of the 60 founding members of the AAGPBL in 1943. At 17, she joined the Kenosha Comets, but her time in the league was brief. She returned to Buhler High School in 1944, where she played basketball, softball, volleyball, and track. After her baseball days, she worked as an optician during World War II. She married William Gilbert McCoy and had a daughter named Susan. Barnes continued to play softball and took up golf after retiring, and she attended AAGPBL Players Association reunions. She is honored in the AAGPBL permanent display at the Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, opened in 1988, which is dedicated to the league.
