Why the name
- The town’s name comes from a local story about a weak coffee that tasted like fresh water. Água Doce means “sweet water.”
Divisions
- The municipality has five districts: Água Doce do Norte, Governador Lacerda de Aguiar, Santa Luzia do Azul, Santo Agostinho, and Vila Nelita.
History at a glance
- 1949: A local farmer, Domingos Marculino, donated the land to the community and the town took his name initially.
- 11 October 1949: The original village was founded while part of Barra de São Francisco.
- 1951: It became a district.
- 6 May 1988: Law created the separate municipality of Água Doce do Norte from Barra de São Francisco.
- 1 January 1989: The municipality was officially established.
- 1988: The name was officially changed to Água Doce do Norte.
