John Orus Bennett III (born August 6, 1948) is a former New Jersey Republican politician and lawyer. He served in the New Jersey Legislature for 25 years, first in the General Assembly (1980–1989) and then in the Senate (1989–2004), representing areas that include parts of Monmouth County. He was the Senate Majority Leader from 1994 to 2002 and the President of the New Jersey Senate from January 2002 to January 2004.

In January 2002, during a transition period after Governor Christine Todd Whitman’s resignation, Bennett served as acting governor for about three and a half days as part of a split leadership arrangement with Democratic Senate Leader Richard Codey.

Education and career
- Bennett attended Dickinson College (1966–1968), earned a BA from West Virginia University in 1970, and earned a JD from Seton Hall University School of Law in 1974.
- He is a lawyer and later became a professor at Montclair State University.

Key events
- In 2003, Bennett lost his bid for re-election to Ellen Karcher.
- He faced allegations of overbilling Marlboro Township for legal services and was involved in a dispute with George Norcross over a pardon he granted during his acting governorship. He also opposed state funding for a Pennsauken convention center.

Later roles
- After leaving the Senate, he remained active in Republican politics. He was elected Monmouth County Republican State Committeeman in 2005 and, in 2012, became chairman of the Monmouth County Republican Party. He later served as an administrator for several towns, including Oceanport, Lavallette, and Woodbridge, and was Interim Administrator in Dover in 2020, with a permanent appointment in 2021.

- Bennett lives in Little Silver, New Jersey, with his wife Peg Bennett.

Recent events
- In January 2022, he was hospitalized after a traffic accident involving a school bus, with reports suggesting the crash may have been caused by a medical issue.
