John Marvin (boxer)
John Nobel Tupas Marvin (born 14 January 1993) is an English-Filipino amateur boxer from the Isle of Wight who has fought for the Philippines at international events. He started boxing as a teen at the Ventnor Boxing Club after a street fight led police to steer him toward a gym, training under Darren Green. He later joined the British Army, where he expanded his boxing career, winning the Army Individuals Championship and earning a place on the British Army boxing team in 2014. By 2017 he was a two-time Combined Services Senior Boxing champion, with an amateur record of 23 wins and 11 losses, 11 by knockout.
In 2016 he met Philippine boxing teammates and learned he could compete for the Philippines if he gained dual citizenship. He obtained Filipino citizenship and began boxing for the Philippines, becoming the first Filipino boxer with foreign heritage on the national team since 2004. He trained with the Philippine squad in Guangzhou in 2017 and went on to win gold at the 2017 Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur, defeating Malaysia's Adli Hafidz Mohamad Pauzi in the final.
Marvin holds the rank of Lance Corporal in the British Army and is assigned to the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment. He is the son of John Sr., a British retired singer, and Teresita Tupas from Pampanga, Philippines, and has a younger brother in the merchant navy. He has visited the Philippines often, including 2017 when he joined the national boxing team. In January 2021 he appeared in Isle of Wight magistrates court and received a suspended sentence after being convicted of ABH and beating up women.
