Paper Mill Playhouse
Paper Mill Playhouse is a 1,200-seat regional theater in Millburn, New Jersey, near New York City, along the Rahway River. It draws audiences and actors from the NYC area because of its close proximity.
Founded in 1934, Paper Mill opened its first performance in 1938. It has been recognized as the Official State Theater of New Jersey (proclaimed in 1972) and has been called a State Center of Artistic Excellence and a major arts organization by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. The theater is known for its large subscription audience and for helping grow regional theater in the United States.
Paper Mill’s early years showcased a mix of classical and modern plays, then shifted toward operettas in the 1940s and early 1950s. In the 1960s and 1970s, associate producers and leaders shaped its direction, and in 1971 the New Jersey Ballet began staging The Nutcracker at Paper Mill, a tradition that continued for years. The Nutcracker remains a hallmark production for the theater.
The building faced a major fire in 1980 and closed for rebuilding. It reopened on October 30, 1982, with a new chapter for Paper Mill. In 2008, during financial difficulties, the Township of Millburn purchased the property and leased it back to the theater, allowing Paper Mill to continue operating independently under a long-term lease.
Over the years, Paper Mill has hosted many notable talents and productions. In 1998, it staged a landmark production of Stephen Sondheim’s Follies with the full score, and the 1999 production of Crazy for You was broadcast on PBS’s Great Performances. The theater has continued to attract prominent artists and rising stars.
Mark S. Hoebee is the producing artistic director, credited with helping to save the theater during the 2008 crisis. The theater has also received the Regional Theatre Tony Award (2016) and is connected with professional and nonprofit theater networks such as COST and the New Jersey Theatre Alliance.
Beyond mainstage productions, Paper Mill runs a large theater school and works with programs for developmentally disabled students through VSA New Jersey. Since 1996, it has hosted the Rising Star Awards, honoring excellence in New Jersey high school theater.
Paper Mill Playhouse remains a respected center for professional regional theater, offering high-quality productions, education programs, and community engagement in New Jersey.
