San Diego Crossing was a major ford on the Rio Grande in Doña Ana County, New Mexico, during the 1800s. It was named for San Diego Mountain, which sits on the east side of the river just across from the crossing. The site lies about 11 miles north of Doña Ana, about 7 miles northwest of the Camino Real to the crossing, and about 17 miles along the west bank from the crossing to the last camp before the party joined Cooke's Wagon Road. It is mentioned in 1849 by Robert Eccleston, who led a wagon train of fifty-niners on October 6. In August 1862, during the Civil War, Lt. Col. Edward E. Eyre reported the distance from Fort Thorn to the crossing as 18 miles along the west bank, with Cooke's Wagon Road starting 3 miles farther up river from the fort. Coordinates: 32°36′13″N 107°01′09″W.
