John Harley Weston
John Harley Weston is a Scottish-born Australian singer-songwriter and musician. He was born John Higgins on 24 April 1967 in Glasgow and grew up in Stewarton, Scotland. He later moved to Tamborine Mountain in Queensland, Australia. He has performed professionally since 1990 under the name John Harley Weston and plays guitar, keyboards and piano accordion.
In 2005 he won the Australian National Songwriting Contest in the rock category for Last Days of Summer, a track from his 2004 album Hope Harbour. The song was co-written with drummer Tony Beard and earned him a top-20 placing in the Unisong International Songwriting Contest and an Honourable Mention at the Billboard World Songwriting Contest. Weston was also named one of the top five independent vocalists by music publisher Dale Kawashima in 2005.
Weston released the albums Welcome Back to Reality in 2008 and Music Man in 2016, both produced by Sandy Jones. In 2022 he released the single Voices, which references Glasgow landmarks and Scottish history. Earlier, in 1999, he wrote Road To Victory for the Brisbane Lions.
His music has been recognized by Australian media and libraries, with songs added to the National Library of Australia and the National Film and Sound Archive. He has performed as a supporting act for acts such as Indigo Girls and Duran Duran, and has played at festivals and events across Queensland.
In the early 1990s, under his birth name John Higgins, he was part of the Scottish band Frontier on Polygram/Vertigo, releasing two singles in 1992 and touring with Wet Wet Wet and Gun. Weston has worked with notable producers and engineers and is endorsed by Takamine, D’Addario and Neumann.
