John F. Kennedy (Georgia politician)
John Flanders Kennedy (born August 20, 1965) is an American Republican politician from Georgia. He served in the Georgia State Senate representing the 18th district from January 2015 to December 2025. He was the President Pro Tempore of the Georgia State Senate from January 9, 2023, to June 2, 2025.
In June 2025, Kennedy announced he would run for Lieutenant Governor of Georgia. Under Georgia Senate rules, a President Pro Tempore who runs for another office causes the post to become vacant, so the position was considered vacant. He resigned from the Senate in December 2025 to focus on his campaign.
Kennedy was unopposed in the 2016, 2018, and 2020 elections, and won reelection in 2022 with 64.4% of the vote.
Personal life and education: Born John Flanders Kennedy in 1965, he is married to Susan Eberhardt and has two children. He earned a BA and JD from Mercer University.
In January 2024, Kennedy co-sponsored Senate Bill 390 to withhold government funding for Georgia libraries affiliated with the American Library Association, citing concerns about the organization’s leadership.
