Moore Neligan
Moore Richard Neligan (1863–1922) was the Anglican Bishop of Auckland in the early 1900s. He was born in Dublin, Ireland, the son of Rev. Maurice Neligan. He studied at Reading School and Trinity College Dublin, graduating in 1884. He was ordained as a deacon in 1886 and as a priest in 1887.
Neligan began his ministry with a curacy at Sculcoates, Hull, then briefly served as Vicar of East Dereham. He later worked at Christ Church, Lancaster Gate, in 1890, and at St Stephen, Westbourne Park, in Paddington, from 1894. In November 1902, he was chosen for the colonial episcopate in Auckland and began his duties there in 1903.
Ill health led him to return to England in 1910, where he served as Rector of Ford, Northumberland for the rest of his career. He also served as a chaplain in the New Zealand Chaplains Department in 1918, attached to the 4th New Zealand Infantry Brigade, and received the British War Medal.
Neligan died on 22 November 1922 at the age of 59.
