John Evelyn Anderson
Major General Sir John Evelyn Anderson KBE (28 June 1916 – 9 September 2007) was a senior British Army officer in the Royal Corps of Signals.
He was commissioned as a second lieutenant on 30 January 1936 after training at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. In the Second World War he fought in the North African campaign from 1941. From December 1942 to September 1943 he served as a General Staff Officer with HQ Eighth Army, then taught at the Middle East Staff College until May 1944. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel in November 1944. During the war he served with the Telecommunications Signal Division and as a staff officer with the Royal Signals Division at SHAEF, and he was mentioned in dispatches three times.
After the war, Anderson was the senior instructor at the School of Signals, worked at the War Office, and became Director of New Zealand Signals. He later held posts with the 11th Armoured Division of BAOR, served in London District as Chief Signals Officer, and returned to BAOR as Commander Royal Signals of the 7th Armoured Division. He finished his career as Signals Officer-in-Chief of the Royal Signals.
He was knighted as a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1971 and retired from the British Army on 29 May 1972 with the rank of major-general.
