John Burton (footballer, born 1863)
John Henry Burton (18 September 1863 – April 1914) was an English footballer who played as a wing-half. He was born in Handsworth, Birmingham.
Burton started his career with Handsworth Victoria, then played for Aston Unity in 1884–85. He joined Aston Villa in April 1885 and stayed with the club until his retirement in 1893 due to a knee injury. He played in Villa’s 1887 FA Cup Final and made his Football League debut on 6 October 1888 at Wellington Road, where Villa beat Blackburn Rovers 6–1.
In the 1888–89 season he appeared in 16 of Villa’s 22 league matches. Overall, he played 28 league games for Villa and scored 1 goal, and he played five FA Cup matches. He was described as strong and able to kick the ball hard.
Burton died in Hockley, Birmingham, in April 1914, aged 50.
