Greenhouse site
Greenhouse site (16 AV 2) is an archaeological site in Avoyelles Parish, near Marksville, Louisiana. It dates from 400 to 1000 CE and is part of the Troyville-Coles Creek culture. It is the most extensively excavated Troyville-Coles Creek site in Louisiana. The site has seven platform mounds arranged around a central plaza about 200 by 350 feet in size. No nearby village has been found, suggesting the site was ceremonial and that people lived elsewhere. The three largest mounds—A, E, and G—rise about 12 feet, 10 feet, and around 12 feet respectively, with bases about 120 feet square and summits about 80 feet square, forming a triangle. Excavations began in 1938, led by archaeologist James A. Ford, and were conducted by a private organization. The site is located at roughly 31.14°N, 92.04°W.
