Seven Cantares for soprano and guitar
Seven Cantares for soprano and guitar is a work by Catalan composer Robert Gerhard (1896–1970). It combines voice with classical guitar and is based on poems by an anonymous author. The set has seven songs written in 1956, plus a solo guitar piece called Fantasía (1957) that can be played between the songs or on its own.
A Music & Letters reviewer described the songs as traditional-sounding folk tunes arranged by Gerhard. The seven songs, whose authors are unknown, are: La Indita, El Toro, La Auséncia, Un Galán y su Morena, La Lobada, La Muerte y la Doncella, and Reinas de la Baraja.
The work was first performed in London in 1957 by soprano Sophie Wyss and guitarist Julian Bream. The score was edited by Belwin-Mills Music Ltd. It was later included in a memorial concert on March 5, 1970.
