John Brown (Medal of Honor)
John Brown (born c. 1838, date of death unknown) was a United States Navy sailor and Medal of Honor recipient. Born in Denmark, he immigrated to the United States and joined the Navy from Maryland. By May 10, 1866, he served as captain of the afterguard on the USS De Soto. Off Eastport, Maine, he and two shipmates rescued two sailors from the USS Winooski from drowning—James Rose and John Russell. For this act, Brown and his shipmates Seaman Richard Bates and Seaman Thomas Burke were awarded the Medal of Honor on August 1, 1866.
