John Bowton
John Bowton (also John Boughton) (1615–1705) was a founding settler of Norwalk, Connecticut. Born in October 1615 in the Connecticut Colony, he is believed to have come to the colonies as a Protestant fleeing France, arriving in Boston in December 1635 at age 20. He settled in Norwalk and played a key role in the colony’s government.
Bowton served as a deputy to the General Assembly of the Colony of Connecticut from Norwalk in many sessions between 1671 and 1686, including October 1671, October 1673, May 1674, May 1675, October 1676, May and October 1677, May 1678, October 1679, May 1680, May 1681, May and October 1682, May 1683, and May and October 1685 through May 1686.
He died in January 1705 in Norwalk and was buried at the East Norwalk Historical Cemetery. He is listed on the Founders Stone bearing the names of Norwalk’s founders.
Family and residence: Bowton lived in Norwalk, Connecticut Colony. He married three times — first to Joan Turney in 1651, then to Abigail Marvin (married January 1, 1657), and later to Mary Stwvwnson (married 1673). He had children named John, Matthew, Hannah, Joseph, Rachel, Abigail, Mary, and Elizabeth.
