John Anthony Swire
Sir John Anthony Swire (1927–2016) was a British businessman from the Swire family. Born in London, he studied at Eton and the University of Oxford. After serving in the Irish Guards from 1945 to 1948, he began his business career at Butterfield & Swire in 1950. He spent most of his career at John Swire & Sons Ltd, serving on the board from 1955 to 1997, as chairman from 1966 to 1987, and as Life President from 1997. He held several other director roles, including at HSBC’s London advisory committee, and was involved with multiple companies. He was awarded the CBE in 1977 and knighted in 1990. He died on 28 November 2016 at the age of 89. He is survived by his two children, Barnaby and Jonathan Swire; his father was John Kidston Swire; his great-grandfather was John Samuel Swire; and his brother was Adrian Swire.
