Jason Parham (born 1986) is an American writer and editor from Los Angeles. He is a senior writer at Wired and the founder and editor-in-chief of the literary magazine Spook. He has previously worked as an editor at Gawker and The Fader, and his writing has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, The New York Times Book Review, The Atlantic, The Village Voice, The New York Times Magazine, and other outlets.
Parham grew up in the Ladera Heights area of Los Angeles. Before joining Wired, he edited at Gawker, The Fader, and Complex, where he drew attention for pieces on topics like Outkast, Ferguson, police brutality, and diversity in publishing and media. Wired described his time at Gawker as making him one of the site’s more visible advocates for inclusion.
He has been recognized for his influence, with Brooklyn Magazine naming him to its 2016 list of 100 Most Influential People in Brooklyn Culture, and Magic Johnson listing him on the 32 Under 32 list as a rising leader.
Parham founded Spook when he was 26; the first issue was published in June 2012, and new issues have appeared annually. Complex named Spook to its 2013 list of 30 Indie Magazines You Need to Know, calling it a progressive, independent magazine with literary works and art and culture coverage. Brooklyn Magazine called Spook a gorgeous literary magazine, and Salon praised it for offering a nuanced, thoughtful view of Blackness in publishing.
