Jan Samuel Maringka
Jan Samuel Maringka (born 11 October 1963 in Jakarta) is an Indonesian prosecutor who served as Inspector General of the Ministry of Agriculture from March 2022 to November 2023. He has held several top positions in the public prosecution service, including chief prosecutors in Maluku (2015–2017) and South Sulawesi (February–November 2017), and the Junior Attorney General for Intelligence Affairs (2017–2020). Earlier, he was the district attorney of Serang (2010–2012).
Maringka studied law at Krisnadwipayana University, graduating in 1988. He earned a master’s degree from Krisnadwipayana Law School in 2003 and a Doctor of Law from Hasanuddin University in 2015. His early career saw him work as a prosecutor in North Jakarta, serve as district attorney of Tarakan, and act as a legal attach in Hong Kong before returning to Indonesia to head the international cooperation section at the attorney general’s office.
As Maluku’s attorney general, he formed anti-illegal levy task forces and handled cases including issues around Bank Maluku’s director. In South Sulawesi, he oversaw large-scale projects and drove revenue recovery, and he started the Prosecutor Greetings radio program. As the junior attorney general for intelligence, his team worked on high-profile cases such as the Bank Century matter and coordinated air transportation projects with Angkasa Pura.
In August 2020, Maringka was dismissed from his deputy attorney general post during the Djoko Tjandra embezzlement case, a move that sparked controversy over possible involvement in the case. He later served as an expert staffer at the attorney general’s office. In 2022, Agriculture Minister Syahrul Yasin Limpo invited him to become inspector general of the ministry; he served in that role until Limpo’s resignation in 2023, after which Maringka also stepped down, citing retirement.
After leaving government service, Maringka became an adviser to Jokowi-supporter groups and announced plans to run in the 2024 elections, seeking seats in the Indonesian parliament from South Sulawesi and later targeting North Sulawesi’s governorship with different party affiliations. He is a member of several professional organizations and has received honors, including the Putu Lambeng title from the Ammatoa people in 2017. He is married to Nina C.H. Maringka and has one child.
