Jim Thaxton
Jim Thaxton (James Ivory Thaxton) is a former American football player who played as a tight end and wide receiver in the NFL. He was born January 11, 1949, in Brownsville, Tennessee, and went to George Washington Carver High School in Memphis. He played college football at Tennessee State from 1969 to 1972 and earned All-American honors in 1971 and 1972.
Thaxton was drafted by the San Diego Chargers in the fourth round of the 1973 NFL draft (84th overall). He spent five NFL seasons with the Chargers, Cleveland Browns, New Orleans Saints, and St. Louis Cardinals. In 1973 with the Chargers, he appeared in 10 games (3 starts) with 7 receptions for 119 yards and 2 touchdowns. In 1974 he played 2 games for the Chargers before being traded to the Browns on September 24, 1974, where he played 12 games (4 starts) with 4 receptions for 71 yards, plus 1 interception and 1 fumble recovery.
In 1975 he was traded to the Oakland Raiders and was released in August. He then joined the New Orleans Saints in 1976, playing 11 games with 1 start, recording 7 receptions for 112 yards and 1 touchdown and returning kicks. In 1977 he played 14 games with 6 starts, making 14 receptions for 211 yards and 1 touchdown. In 1978 he was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals, appearing in 5 games with 3 receptions for 31 yards and 1 touchdown.
Thaxton stood 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighed about 240 pounds, wearing numbers 86, 84, and 87 during his NFL career.
