James Joseph Hogan (July 6, 1837 – September 8, 1914) was a grocer, Democratic politician, and Wisconsin pioneer born in St. John’s, Newfoundland Colony. He built his career in La Crosse, Wisconsin, where he worked in the grocery trade and the lumber industry. Hogan served as the 17th mayor of La Crosse from 1875 to 1877. He later represented the La Crosse 1st district in the Wisconsin State Assembly from 1889 to 1893 and was the Assembly’s 36th Speaker from 1891 to 1893. He died in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, and was buried at Oak Grove Cemetery in La Crosse. He was married to Amanda Cook (died 1915) and had two children, Gertrude M. Hogan and James Cook Hogan.
