James Atwell

James Edgar Atwell (3 June 1946 – 12 December 2020) was an English Anglican priest who served as Dean of Winchester from 2006 to 2016. He was born in Calne, Wiltshire, and studied at Dauntsey's School and Exeter College, Oxford. He trained for the priesthood at Cuddesdon and was ordained in 1971. His early ministry included a curacy at St John the Evangelist, East Dulwich, a curacy at the Church of St Mary the Great in Cambridge, and a role as Chaplain at Jesus College, Cambridge. He earned MA and BD degrees. He then became Vicar of St Lawrence, Towcester, and later Provost (and then Dean) of St Edmundsbury Cathedral, serving there from 1995 until his move to Winchester in 2006. He retired as Dean of Winchester in July 2016. He was married to Lorna Atwell. James Atwell died on 12 December 2020, aged 74.
