Loran Ellis Baker (legislative councillor)
Loran Ellis Baker (May 13, 1831 – December 31, 1899) was a businessman and politician from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. He built a large importing and mercantile business and later owned ships to help with trade. He was the son of Delina (Kenney) and Ellis Baker and was their only child.
In 1870, Baker became the first president of the Western Counties Railway Company, one of the founding companies of the Dominion Atlantic Railway. He is credited with helping establish tourism in Nova Scotia in 1885 by using the Yarmouth Steamship Company to bring visitors and by creating hotels and other amenities.
He was appointed to the Legislative Council of Nova Scotia in 1878 and served until his death. He died on December 31, 1899, while sleeping on a train between Boston and New York City.
