MTA (app)
The MTA app is a mobile app from New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority that gives real-time transit information. It started life as MYmta and began testing in April 2018, with a beta released on July 2, 2018.
It’s meant to be an all-in-one source for MTA data, replacing separate apps for subway timing, bus timing, and rail time tables (LIRR and Metro-North). The app shows live subway and bus arrivals, rail schedules, and current service changes, and it includes trip planning and paratransit requests (Access-A-Ride).
The app also covers non-MTA services, such as the Staten Island Ferry, PATH, JFK AirTrain, Newark AirTrain, and NJ Transit, and it can display elevator and escalator statuses in accessible stations.
You can save favorite trips, stations, and stops for quick access. The MTA App updates you on delays and service changes, helping you plan accordingly.
As of 2025, the app does not support in‑app fare payments, but it links to the TrainTime app for buying tickets. The MTA plans to integrate fare payment into the MTA app in the future as part of OMNY.
In 2023–2024, the MTA revamped MYmta into the new MTA App, adding features like favorites, improved search, a visual map of nearby trains and buses, and enhanced Access-A-Ride booking. The new app officially rolled out on March 25, 2024.
In late 2025, the MTA announced plans with Expo to develop a further rebuilt version due in the first quarter of 2026. The MTA App is developed by the same team that created the TrainTime app.
