Jagatpur is a village near Burari in Delhi, on the city’s outskirts. It is one of Delhi’s 122 villages and is bordered by the Yamuna River, which sometimes floods the area. Floods have forced resettlement in the past. Although it feels rural, its closeness to Delhi makes Jagatpur somewhat semi-urban.

With rising land values, many people have stopped traditional cattle rearing and switched to other work, though some still raise cattle more than in most parts of Delhi. The village has a local Caste Panchayat led by representatives of 26 Kunbas. Most residents are Hindus (about 85%), with a small Muslim minority. Native Gujjars live here, along with migrants from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The population is around 15,000 and Jagatpur is part of the Jharoda ward in the Burari constituency, a relatively small community in a large ward.

There are two main community groups in the village. There is no Anganwadi in Jagatpur village itself, but there is one in the Jagatpur Extension. The area has one Primary Health Center in Jagatpur Extension, housed in rented space and lacking proper facilities. Sports are a major pastime, with two Kabaddi tournaments held each year thanks to support from non-residents, plus dog and ox races. Kabaddi is a traditional favorite, though some youngsters now enjoy cricket and other modern sports.
