Jack Scheible
John G. Scheible (February 16, 1866 – August 6, 1897) was an American baseball pitcher from Youngstown, Ohio. He threw left-handed and played in the Major Leagues for two seasons, debuting in 1893 with the Cleveland Spiders and making his last appearance in 1894 for the Philadelphia Phillies. In his MLB career, he went 1-2 with a 5.40 ERA and a .143 batting average.
Born in Brier Hill, now part of Youngstown, Scheible worked at a flour mill before playing in the minor leagues. After leaving the majors, he returned to Youngstown and played amateur and semi-pro baseball. He died of pneumonia at age 31 after becoming ill while en route to Erie, Pennsylvania, to pitch a game, and was treated at Mahoning County Hospital.
He was survived by his father John Sr., three sisters (Elizabeth, Katherine, and Mary Miller) and two brothers (Charles and William); his brother Charles would later become mayor of Youngstown. He was remembered as a determined ballplayer and a sociable, quiet, unassuming man.
