Sarah Godlewski
Sarah Ann Godlewski (born November 9, 1981) is an American businesswoman and politician who has served as Wisconsin’s 31st secretary of state since March 17, 2023. She was appointed by Governor Tony Evers after the previous secretary resigned. Before that, she was the 36th state treasurer of Wisconsin from 2019 to 2023. She briefly ran for the U.S. Senate in 2022 but withdrew before the Democratic primary. In 2025 she became the first vice chair of the Wisconsin Democratic Party.
Godlewski was born and raised in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and graduated from Memorial High School in 2000. She earned a BA in peace and conflict resolution from George Mason University and has completed several professional programs related to public finance and leadership.
Her career includes work for Booz Allen Hamilton (2004–2012) and leading strategy for Arapahoe County, Colorado (2012–2016). She co-founded the investment firm MaSa Impact with her husband Max Duckworth in 2015. She has been active in education reform, public health projects overseas, and Democratic politics, including work on Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign. She has served on boards such as UNICEF and on other nonprofit and investment groups.
As treasurer, she opposed a 2018 ballot measure to eliminate the treasurer’s office and won the 2018 election, taking office in 2019. During her term, she worked on retirement savings programs and other financial initiatives and chaired the Wisconsin Board of Commissioners of Public Lands, which pursued education funding and policy discussions, including climate-risk considerations in investments.
In March 2023, Gov. Evers appointed her to complete the term as secretary of state, which runs through January 2027. She is married to Max Duckworth and they have one child.
