Jablonné nad Orlicí
Jablonné nad Orlicí is a small town in the Pardubice Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 3,100 residents. The historic town center is well preserved and protected as an urban monument zone. The town’s old name was Gablona, likely connected to a salt toll house.
Where it is and what it’s like
- About 15 km northeast of Ústí nad Orlicí and 57 km east of Pardubice.
- It lies mainly in the Orlické Foothills, with its eastern part reaching into the Orlické Mountains. The highest point is 586 m above sea level.
- The Tichá Orlice River flows through the town.
History in brief
- The first written mention is from 1304 (as Gablona). The town formed in the late 13th century, around 1285.
- It belonged to various estates and families over the centuries, including Zbraslav Monastery, the Kostka of Postupice family, the Pernštejns, and the Liechtensteins.
- The railway arrived in 1874, boosting development. Jablonné nad Orlicí became a town in 1906.
Transport and landmarks
- The I/11 road (Hradec Králové to Šumperk) and railway lines Prague–Gdynia and Ústí nad Orlicí–Moravský Karlov pass through the town.
- The historic center centers on Náměstí 5. května square, with many traditional folk and Baroque houses.
- The main square features a storey farmhouse arcade with a wooden porch from 1750, now the town hall. A Marian column from 1748 stands in the square.
- The Church of Saint Bartholomew is a Baroque church built in 1732, replacing an older church destroyed by fire.

- Jablonné nad Orlicí has a sister city relationship with Stockerau in Austria.
