Guitar Beat is the debut album by the neo-surf band The Raybeats. It was released in 1981 and recorded in April 1981 at Woodcottage, Goring-On-Thames. The music blends surf rock with avant-garde textures. The album was produced by Martin Rushent and released on PVC/Passport. It features ten original instrumental tracks plus a cover of a Jan and Dean song. The sleeve playfully describes Side One as the “listless, spotty & wasteful side” and Side Two as the “brave, clean & reverent side,” and it includes a hand-colored band photo by Laura Levine on the front. All songs are written by Pat Irwin, Jody Harris, Don Christensen, and George Scott III. Guitar Beat is followed by It’s Only a Movie! in 1983. AllMusic called it “a magnificent, echo-drenched set of concise and atmospheric riff-driven tunes” that would fit as the soundtrack for a James Bond movie directed by David Lynch.
